Queridos amigos, respondiendo a nuestro llamado, 21 eurodiputados firmaron una carta a Kerry y se la entregaron durante su visita a Bruselas. Encontrarán la carta en anexo.

EUROPARLAMENTARIOS ENVÍAN HOY CARTA A SECRETARIO DE ESTADO NORTEAMERICANO JOHN KERRY SOLICITANDO LA LIBERACIÓN Y EL REGRESO A CUBA DE LOS CINCO HÉROES CUBANOS ENCARCELADOS EN ESTADOS UNIDOS.

Bélgica, 23 de abril. Un grupo de veintiún eurodiputados del grupo parlamentario GUE/NGL, encabezados por la presidenta del grupo, la alemana, Gabriele Zimmer (Die Linke) y el coordinador para asuntos exteriores del grupo, el español, Willy Meyer (Izquierda Unida), aprovechando la visita a Bruselas del Secretario de Estado de los Estados Unidos John Kerry; le hicieron llegar hoy una carta en la que solicitan la liberación y el regreso a Cuba de los Cinco cubanos encarcelados en Estados Unidos.

En la carta, los eurodiputados denuncian las duras condiciones del encarcelamiento de estos cinco hombres y las violaciones de sus derechos como la negación de visas a algunos de sus familiares para visitarlos, así como las numerosas irregularidades jurídicas del caso.

La carta recuerda que en el 2005 el Grupo de Trabajo sobre Detenciones Arbitrarias de la ONU alertó de las arbitrariedades del caso e hizo un llamamiento a una revisión del proceso judicial.

Según expresara el eurodiputado Willy Meyer, Vicepresidente de la Comisión de Asuntos Exteriores del Parlamento Europeo, esta segunda legislatura del presidente _Obama es “la oportunidad de satisfacer las promesas incumplidas en su primer mandato, incluido el cierre inmediato de la inhumana cárcel de Guantánamo y la devolución del territorio a Cuba, y reorientar definitivamente la política hacia América Latina: acabando con el injusto e ilegal bloqueo hacia la isla y haciendo uso de su prerrogativa para indultar a los 5 cubanos injustamente presos por haber realizado labores de información destinada a impedir actos terroristas"._

La carta fue firmada por veintiún eurodiputados de diez países miembros de la Unión Europea: Alemania, España, Portugal, Grecia, República Checa, Francia, Chipre, Dinamarca, Suecia y Países Bajos.

MEPs sent today a letter to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry calling for the release and return to Cuba of the Cuban Five, imprisoned in the United States

Belgium, April 23th.

A twenty-one MEPs of the GUE/NGL parliamentary group, headed by the president of the group, Gabriele Zimmer (Die Linke, Germany) and the coordinator for foreign affairs of the group, Willy Meyer (Izquierda Unida, Spain), took advantage of the visit to Brussels of the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. Today the MEPs sent a letter to John Kerry, requesting the release and return to Cuba of the Cuban Five, imprisoned in the United States.

In the letter, the MEPs denounce the harsh conditions of imprisonment of these five men and the violations of their rights, as the denial of visas to some of their relatives, as well as numerous legal irregularities in the case.

The letter points out that in 2005 the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the UN made a warning about the arbitrariness of the case and called for a review of the judicial process.

According to MEP Willy Meyer, Vice President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, the second term of President Obama is "the opportunity to meet the promises in his first term, including the immediate shut-down of the inhumane prison in Guantánamo and the return of this territory to Cuba, and to finally redirect the US policy toward Latin America: putting an end to the unjust and illegal blockade against the island and using his prerogative as president to pardon the five Cubans unjustly imprisoned for collecting information to prevent terrorist acts."

The letter was signed by twenty-one MEPs from ten member countries of the European Union: Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, France, Cyprus, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands.
